We can’t hide our love for coffee anymore, and when we have the chance to talk about it, we seize it, keep talking about it and we can’t seem to stop! Who can blame us? Coffee is the most lovable beverage all around the globe.

We know that coffee is all about experience, and coffee enthusiasts love to live and share this experience in their cup of coffee!

With that said, let’s take you on our journey of discovering how coffee is made and the types of coffee roasters.

How coffee is made: from seed to cup!

How coffee is made: from seed to cup

Have you ever stopped wondering where coffee is produced? People frequently picture coffee beans growing on a plant, but what they don’t know is that coffee doesn't actually begin as a bean at all.

Actually, a coffee bean is a seed that develops from a particular variety of berries. Consequently, we can state that coffee beans are actually a fruit!

Coffee berries normally include split-in-two beans. However, in about 5% of the harvested beans, a bean might not split, and this kind of coffee bean is often referred to as a "peaberry" because of its shape that looks like a pea!

Furthermore, a coffee plant can take up to five years to produce its precious fruit, and it can't grow in all climates!

The coffee trees would need particular attention with regard to soil in order to yield a good crop. This restricts the areas where coffee can be grown, such as Latin America, the Caribbean, and anywhere that is usually warm and subtropical or equatorial.

The process of harvesting and processing!

The process of harvesting and processing

The berries are typically picked by hand or a machine. The berry's fruit must be taken out in order to extract the beans, and the beans must then be processed.

Only two methods of processing beans are currently known: wet processing, which is more recent, and dry processing, which is an older method.

The dried, processed beans are spread out in the sun for about two weeks, turning them occasionally to ensure even drying. This is the older method.

The modern one, the wet processing, has two steps in this coffee harvesting process: washing and fermentation.

The pulp that is still on the beans will soften during this process and be rinsed off. This method of processing is more frequently used today because it protects the beans from any harm!

The beans are sorted after the processing is complete. The bad beans are all thrown out, and the good ones are packaged and shipped. They’re referred to as "green coffee beans" at this point.

After that, comes the roasting process!

The final and crucial step in the production of coffee is roasting. To produce the ideal product, the timing and temperature must be just right! The beans will split as they roast, releasing their coating.

The method used for roasting the beans greatly influences how flavorful the coffee is. For instance, the flavor of roasted beans will increase with roasting time.

Although, it is believed that more caffeine means a higher intensity in flavor; however, this is not true! It's actually the complete opposite.

More caffeine is extracted from coffee beans with more roasting time.

Although you can purchase already-roasted beans, many people choose to roast their own for the freshest taste.

Interesting fact: did you know that there’s a certain type of coffee that’s dripped for 12-48 hours?!

It’s the cold brew one in which cold water and ground coffee beans are steeped for 12 to 48 hours to produce cold brew coffee. The strength of the cold brew will increase with the amount of steeping time.

The different types of coffee roasters

The two most popular coffee roasters are: drum roaster and hot air!

Drum Roasters

This roaster heats a rotating drum to roast coffee. Both convection from the surrounding air and conductive heat transfer from the drum's surface are applied to the beans.

A Drum Roaster's simple design makes it suitable for a wide range of heat sources, flexible manual and automated procedures, long-lasting moving parts, and a range of sizes. A drum roaster is the best option if you want a dark roast profile because they consistently produce darker roasts than any other roaster.

Hot-air or fluid bed roaster

The fluid-bed roaster is the complete opposite of the drum roaster in relation to the best dark roast machine.

Fluid-bed roasters typically roast coffee more quickly and with less energy than drum roasters do. Due to its propensity to retain more complexity and acidity than drum roasters, this lends itself well to lighter roasts.

Because fluid-beds only use convection to roast the beans, they are able to accomplish this. Air is heated beforehand and then forced through a column of coffee beans.

The beans float on a "bed" of hot air created by this airflow. Fluid-beds are renowned for their greater consistency, ability to retain flavor, and compact design.

They’re significantly more complex than their drum counterparts, though, which results in more expensive equipment, challenging maintenance, and constrained capacity.

Additionally, the majority of fluid-bed roasters don’t offer the option to check the beans as they roast.
